Sunset Park ADA Pathway Construction Underway

Sunset Park ADA Path Project Underway!

The Wildwood Park District is excited to begin work on the Sunset Park ADA Path Project—a major step forward in enhancing accessibility and improving the park experience for everyone in our community.

Construction Update:

Construction is expected to begin on Thursday, May 14th. The park has been marked and prepared for excavation, and contractor activity is underway.

Please use caution in the surrounding street and parking areas as contractor vehicles and equipment will be active on-site.

The park is currently closed to public use during this phase of construction. The Park District will continue to evaluate which sections may need to remain closed leading up to Memorial Day weekend based on project progress in the coming weeks.

Memorial Day Weekend Access:

The boat ramp, trailer parking, beach, and piers WILL remain open and accessible for public use during the holiday weekend.

Project Highlights:

  • ~300 feet of new ADA-compliant asphalt pathway (minimum 5’ wide)
  • Direct connections to key amenities including the playground, pavilion, grills, benches, and beach access
  • ADA-compliant ramps, transitions, and accessible routes meeting Illinois and Federal Standards
  • Full site grading, base prep, asphalt installation, and restoration of disturbed areas
  • Careful design to preserve trees and minimize environmental impact
  • Additional improvements including regrading and restoration low areas near the boat ramp access platform/trailer parking.

Fun Fact:

As we celebrate the Wildwood Park District’s 50th Anniversary, this project represents a major milestone in expanding accessibility across our parks system—and serves as a key foundation for our upcoming ADA Transition Plan and Accessibility Audit.

We’re proud to continue investing in parks that are inclusive, welcoming, and accessible for all.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we complete these improvements—stay tuned for updates!
